What Is Engineered Flooring?

If you've been shopping for new floors, you've probably seen the term "engineered flooring" and wondered what it actually means. The short answer: it's real wood, just built in a smarter way.

How It's Made

A solid wood plank is one thick piece of timber all the way through. Engineered flooring takes a different approach. The top layer is genuine hardwood — oak, walnut, or whatever species you fancy — bonded to a core of cross-layered plywood beneath.

That layered construction is the key. Because the grain in each layer runs in alternating directions, the boards resist the natural expanding and shrinking that causes gaps, warping, and cupping in solid wood. Your floor stays flatter and more stable, whatever the season.

Where Can It Go?

This extra stability means engineered flooring works in places solid wood would struggle. It's ideal over underfloor heating and perfectly suited to kitchens, basements, and ground-floor rooms where moisture levels run a bit higher.

Installation is straightforward too. Most boards use a click-lock system, so they slot together without glue or nails and float over your existing subfloor. Quick, clean, and cost-effective.

Can You Sand It?

Many engineered boards have a hardwood wear layer thick enough to be sanded and refinished two or three times. Look for a wear layer of 4mm or above if that matters to you.

Worth Considering?

You get real wood looks, better stability, more flexibility on where it can go, and often a friendlier price tag. It's the most popular type of wood flooring in the UK for good reason.
